Trail Tips

Before You Walk

🎒

What to Bring

Layer clothing for mountain weather. Bring a rain cover — Japan's mountains create their own micro-weather patterns. Trekking poles are valuable on steep descents, especially after rain when clay paths become slippery. Always carry at least 2 litres of water per person.

🗓️

Best Times to Go

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most dramatic and comfortable walking conditions. Summer brings lush greenery to high alpine routes but heat and humidity at lower elevations. Winter trails require special equipment and experience.

⛩️

Trail Etiquette

Yield to ascending hikers on narrow paths — it is standard Japanese mountain etiquette. Carry out all waste (including food scraps). Stay on marked trails, especially in UNESCO and National Park areas where off-trail walking causes serious ecological damage.
