Footwear Recommendations

Navigation
Trail Hiking Boots

Waterproof mid-ankle boots recommended for most Japan trails. Vibram-soled for grip on wet stone and slippery clay paths.

Safety
Merino Wool Socks

Moisture-wicking and blister-preventing. Bring 3–4 pairs minimum for multi-day trips. Change socks at lunch on long days.

Trail Hiking Boots
Sandals or Slip-Ons

Many trail-side shrines, ryokan, and onsen require shoe removal. Light sandals save time and reduce social friction at traditional venues.

Merino Wool Socks
Microspikes (Winter)

Required for mountain trails above 1000m from November through April. Strap-on yakumori crampons available at most Japanese outdoor shops.
